MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team got a pair of homers in the nightcap Thursday to take a nonconference doubleheader split with Alverno College at Alverno Field.
Lawrence won the second game 6-3 after Alverno took the opener 20-6 in five innings.
Ceara Larson and Liz Jonjak both hit two-run homers for the Vikings in the second game. Emilia Jackson got the win with a complete-game effort for the Vikings (3-11). She allowed seven hits, struck out two and walked one.
The Vikings grabbed the lead in the top of the first after Amanda Karnatz, who went 3-for-3, led off the game with a double. Larson homered two batters later and Lawrence led 2-0.
Alverno tied it at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning, but Lawrence took the lead back in the top of the when Jonjak walked and later scored on Emily Ueberfluss' single for a 3-2 edge. Lawrence pushed the lead to 4-2 when it manufactured a run in the fourth when Jackson walked, moved to second on a sacrifice and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Inferno (9-4) had trimmed the lead to 4-3 before Jonjak provided insurance runs in the sixth. After Lexi Angemi singled, Jonjak homered three batters later to put the Vikings up 6-3.
Sam Korn made the start, allowed four runs in three innings and took the loss.
In the opener, Alverno broke the game open with 10 runs in the first two innings and went on to the win. Carina Jimenez went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and four runs batted in.
Karnatz went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run, and seven other Vikings picked up one hit apiece. Sofie Pedersen had a double and drove in a run for the Vikings.
Madeline MacLean made the start and took the loss for the Vikings.
