APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University softball team got a superb pitching performance from Emilia Jackson in the opener Sunday, and that led the Vikings to a Midwest Conference doubleheader split with Grinnell College at Whiting Field.
Lawrence took the first game 3-1, and Grinnell won the nightcap 12-2 in six innings.
Jackson allowed three hits over seven innings, struck out one and walked none to pick up the victory in game one. Jackson won the duel with Darice Wheeler, who gave up four hits, struck out three and walked three for the Pioneers.
Lawrence (12-20, 8-8 MWC) grabbed the lead in the second, and Madeline MacLean started the rally with a single. After a fly out, Sofie Pedersen picked up a walk to set the table for Liz Jonjak. Jonjak smacked a double to right field to score both runners and put the Vikings up 2-0.
Grinnell (18-20, 13-5) got a run back when Lily Seibert doubled and scored in the third. The Pioneers threatened again in the sixth when Maddie Matsubara tripled with two outs. Jackson then struck out Wheeler, one of the league's top hitters, to end the threat.
Ceara Larson provided an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when she smoked a line drive home run to right to put the Vikings up 3-1. An error brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Jackson retired the next two hitters to end the game.
In the nightcap, Grinnell scored seven runs in the first three innings to take control. Elle Adams went the distance to get the win, and she gave up eight hits over six innings.
