FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The Millikin University women's basketball team pulled away in the third quarter Saturday and went on to a 70-38 nonconference victory over Lawrence University at the Cruzin' Classic.
The Big Blue (4-5) outscored Lawrence 21-7 in the third quarter to build a 25-point lead with 10 minutes to play. Lawrence (2-8) never got closer than 24 points in the fourth quarter.
Kenya Earl paced the Vikings with 12 points, and she pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Rookie forward Elena Gonzales added a season-high eight points as she hit 3-of-4 shots from the floor. Gonzales also added five rebounds, one block and one steal.
Devin Curry led Millikin with 14 points and was one of four Big Blue players in double figures.
Millikin jumped out to a nine-point lead late in the first quarter, but Earl buried a three-pointer and Natalie Kramer added a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 18-14 after one period.
Millikin pushed the lead back to 14 points in the second quarter, but the Vikings came back with a 6-0 run with baskets from Earl, Gonzales and Kramer to trim the lead to 34-26. Curry's three-pointer with less than a minute left in the half gave the Big Blue a 37-26 lead at the break.
The Big Blue then scored the first eight points of the third quarter to start putting the game out of reach.
Lawrence returns to action on Sunday when the Vikings play Randolph-Macon College.
