GALESBURG, Ill. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team staged a late rally Tuesday, but Knox College hung on for a 60-52 Midwest Conference victory at Memorial Gymnasium.
Lawrence trailed by 19 points with less than seven minutes left but trimmed the margin to six points with just under a minute left.
Rookie forward Elena Gonzales paced Lawrence with 15 points and added eight rebounds. Leah Reeves added 10 points and six rebounds for the Vikings (2-10, 0-4 MWC), and Kenya Earl had nine points and a team-best nine rebounds.
Jarrelyn McCall led Knox (8-4, 3-1) with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.
A pair of Kyra Huffman free throws gave Knox its biggest lead of the game at 49-30 with 6:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lawrence's Olivia Hoesley hit a three-pointer to start a 13-4 run to cut the margin to 53-43 with 3:31 left. Gonzales added four points during that run with a pair of jumpers.
Nicole Cummins' jumper got the lead under double digits at 55-46, but Taliah Ellis countered with a jumper for Knox. Erin Hill then buried back-to-back three-pointers, sandwiched around a Huffman free throw, to cut the lead to 58-52 with 53 seconds left.
Lawrence was forced to foul and Huffman hit two free throws to push the lead back to 60-52. A Lawrence turnover then sealed the win for Knox.
