Big second half leads Lawrence past Lady Blues

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team took command in the second half Saturday and went on to a 68-56 Midwest Conference victory over Illinois College at Sherman Gymnasium.

The Vikings' inside duo of Kenya Earl and Leah Reeves did some serious damage and got some help from guards Olivia Hoesley and Erin Hill.

Earl scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Reeves posted a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Hoesley drained four three-pointers on her way to 14 points, and Hill had 10 points and a game-high six assists.

Lawrence (4-11, 2-5 MWC) limited Illinois College star Brielle Greenleaf to 13 points and four rebounds.

The game was a back-and-forth affair until late in the third quarter when Lawrence took charge. The Vikings led 37-36 when Earl drained a three-pointer and Reeves followed with a jumper for a 42-36 edge. After McKenzie Skaggs hit a three-pointer for the Lady Blues, Lauren Deveikis countered with a jumper to give Lawrence a 44-39 edge after three periods.

Sydney Lett's layup to start the fourth quarter trimmed Lawrence's lead to 44-41, but the Vikings scored the game's next 10 points. Deveikis hit a jumper and Earl scored the next eight points to put Lawrence up 54-41 with 5:05 remaining.

Illinois College (4-10, 3-3) managed to get the lead down to single digits at 56-47 with 2:21 left, but Lawrence then sealed the victory at the foul line. The Vikings went 12-for-12 on free throws over the final 2:00 to clinch the win.

Lawrence went 20-for-24 at the line for the game. The Vikings also did a nice job defensively as they held Illinois College to 27.3 percent shooting from the floor, including 17.9 percent (5-28) from beyond the arc.
