APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team held off a late Beloit College rally Saturday and posted a 63-54 Midwest Conference victory over the Bucs at Alexander Gymnasium.
Lawrence's balanced attack saw four players score in double figures as Olivia Hoesley, Erin Hill and Kenya Earl finished with 12 points apiece. Leah Reeves added 11 points, three rebounds and three assists. Hill collected eight rebounds, and Hoesley and Earl had two blocks apiece.
Lawrence point guard Nicole Cummins finished with six points and game highs with five assists and five steals.
Shelby Kline led Beloit (3-13, 1-8 MWC) with 16 points, and Melissa McLean had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Lawrence (5-12, 3-6) was in command throughout the first half as the Vikings led by nine in the first quarter and pushed the lead to 32-21 at the half. The Vikings led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter before Beloit rallied.
The Bucs trimmed the lead to 49-43 after three quarters and tied the game at 49-49 on Jaylan Dunn's jumper with 6:56 left in the game.
Cummins drained a pair of free throws and Hill added a nifty fastbreak layup and the Vikings led 53-49 with 5:11 left. The Bucs cut the lead back to 53-52, but Cummins hit a 17-foot jumper and Shonell Benjamin added a pair of free throws for a 57-52 advantage.
Cummins then stole the ball and Earl converted a putback layup to push the lead to 59-52 with 2:11 remaining. McLean's layup trimmed the lead back to 59-54, but another putback layup by Earl gave the Vikings a 61-54 edge with 31 seconds left.
Beloit then missed a pair of shots, and Earl converted two free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the victory.
