Lake Forest keeps Vikings at bay

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lake Forest College women's basketball team pulled away early in the second half Saturday and then held back Lawrence University for a 69-52 Midwest Conference victory in the regular season finale at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Foresters led by 13 points early in the second half, and Lawrence got no closer than seven points the rest of the way before Lake Forest pulled away late.

Kelsey Schmitt led Lake Forest (12-13, 9-7 MWC) with 22 points, and Kelsey Burton added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Kenya Earl paced Lawrence (7-18, 5-11) with 18 points and five rebounds. Earl went 8-for-8 from the foul line and finished the season by shooting 86.8 percent from the stripe.

Erin Hill added 12 points off the bench to go with three rebounds and three assists for the Vikings. Leah Reeves scored 10 points, grabbed four rebounds and picked up two steals for Lawrence.

The Foresters scored the first four points of the second half to build a 36-23 lead, and the Vikings were still down by 11 late in the third quarter. Reeves then hit a jumper, and Earl added a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 48-41 with 1:21 left in the period.

Burton and Molly Schoenlein scored the final four points of the quarter, and Lake Forest led 52-41 after three. Lawrence cut the lead back to nine points twice early in the fourth quarter, but Lake Forest used a late 7-0 run to seal the victory. The Foresters led by as many as 20 points in the final two minutes.
