Vikings drop MWC game at Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team fell behind early Saturday, and Beloit College pulled away late for a 71-53 Midwest Conference victory at Flood Arena.

Kenya Earl scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace the Vikings. Erin Hill added 12 points, and Shonell Benjamin had 11 for Lawrence (3-5, 1-3 MWC).

Candace Cunningham had a double-double for Beloit (1-7, 1-3) with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Cunningham hit 10-of-14 shots from the floor.

Beloit led 17-11 after the first quarter, but the Bucs scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to grab a 28-11 advantage. Lawrence battled back by scoring the game's next 10 points as Liz Jonjak hit a pair of 3-pointers, and Karina Herrera's layup trimmed the margin to 28-21.

Beloit got a 3-pointer from Lauren Glaser in the final seconds of the second quarter to pull out to a 35-23 lead at the half.

The Bucs led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, and Lawrence got as close as eight points in the period.

Lawrence was down 15 early in the final quarter but cut the lead to 10 on Benjamin's layup with 7:33 remaining. That's as close as Lawrence would get, and Beloit pulled away in the final three minutes.
