Slow start hurts Vikings in loss to Ripon

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team got off to a slow start Wednesday, and that proved to be too much to overcome in a 62-44 Midwest Conference loss to Ripon College at Alexander Gymnasium.

Ripon jumped out to a 30-11 lead at the half after the Vikings hit just 4-of-27 shots from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. Lawrence outscored Ripon 33-32 in the second half.

Kenya Earl posted a double-double for Lawrence (4-8, 1-5 MWC) as she scored a game-high 16 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds and a game-high three steals.

Natalie Geiger and Megan Dille scored nine points apiece to pace Ripon (5-7, 1-4), and Maggie Oimoen had a team-best nine rebounds.

Ripon hit six of its first eight shots from the floor to pull out to a 15-0 lead. The Red Hawks led 16-5 after the first quarter and its largest lead of the first half was 30-11 at the break.

The Vikings were down 38-20 before making a run at Ripon at the end of the third quarter. The Vikings got five consecutive points from Karina Herrera to trim the margin to 38-25 after three quarters.

Leah Reeves' layup with 9:07 left in the game cut Ripon's lead to 39-27, but the Red Hawks then pulled away for good. Ripon scored the game's next six points to grab a 45-27 lead, and Lawrence never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
