GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Lawrence University women's basketball team fell behind early in overtime Saturday, and Grinnell College hung on for a 64-59 Midwest Conference win over the Vikings at Darby Gymnasium.
Kenya Earl paced Lawrence with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds. Earl made just three shots from the floor but connected on 14-of-16 shots at the foul line.
Katie Tomczik led Grinnell (6-9, 4-5) with a double-double of 15 points and 17 rebounds.
Lawrence led for long stretches in the game and went up 45-40 on a pair of Earl free throws with 8:11 left in the fourth quarter. Grinnell then scored the game's next six points to take a 46-45 lead.
A layup from Herrera and a pair of Earl free throws gave the Vikings a 49-46 edge, but Grinnell scored the next five points to go up 51-49. The Vikings had the ball in the final seconds, and Earl was fouled as time expired. She knocked down both free throws to tie the game at 51-51 and force overtime.
Grinnell scored the first five points of the overtime, but layups from Benjamin and Earl trimmed the lead to 56-55. Sasha Thomas countered with a big 3-pointer for the Pioneers, and Lawrence didn't get closer than three points after that.
The Pioneers went 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 20 seconds to seal the win.
