Vikings can't dig out of big early hole against Beloit

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University fell behind by 20 points in the first quarter Saturday, and Beloit College went on to a 60-46 Midwest Conference victory at Alexander Gymnasium.

Kenya Earl led Lawrence with 17 points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocks. Karina Herrera came off the bench to score 10 points, and Leah Reeves had nine points and six rebounds for the Vikings.

Shelby Kline paced Beloit (4-13, 3-7 MWC) with 22 points and seven assists. Candace Cunningham added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucs, and Danielle Strejc added 12 points. Kline went 5-for-8 on 3-pointers and Strejc was 4-for-8.

Beloit was on fire to start the game and made 11 of its first 14 shots from the floor, including four 3-pointers, to build a 26-4 lead with 2:21 left in the opening period. Lawrence (4-12, 1-9) finished the first quarter on a 7-0 run, capped by Earl's long 3-pointer at the buzzer, to trim the margin to 26-11 after one.

Three more Beloit 3-pointers helped the Bucs build a 37-14 lead, but the Vikings responded with a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 39-23 at the half.

The Vikings limited Beloit to 21.4 percent shooting from the floor in the second half, but Lawrence wasn't able to climb back into the game. Lawrence trimmed the lead to 12 points twice in the third quarter before Beloit built the lead back to 51-36 after three.

Lawrence didn't get closer than 13 points in the fourth quarter.
