Earl tops 1,000 points but Vikings fall to Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- Lawrence University women's basketball standout Kenya Earl passed 1,000 points on Friday, but the Vikings dropped an 80-67 Midwest Conference decision at Illinois College.

Earl scored 15 points for the Vikings and became the fifth player in Lawrence history to top the 1,000-point plateau. Earl now has 1,001 points and ranks fifth on the career scoring list. Lawrence Hall of Famer Jackie Huss (1,105) is 104 points ahead of Earl in fourth place on the list.

Rookie Ashley Batac added 13 points for the Vikings (4-6, 1-2 MWC) and went 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Grace Minogue added nine points for Lawrence, and Emma Carlson and KJ Davis had eight points apiece. Lawrence point guard Liz Jonjak collected a game-high five assists.

Krista Bass and Kendra Bass had 11 points apiece for Illinois College (7-3, 3-0), and Lilly Pepper pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Vikings got off to a rough start and trailed 8-1 to start the game. Lawrence battled back and trailed 16-8 after the first quarter.

Illinois College stretched its lead to 28-12 in the second quarter before the Vikings scored seven straight points. Earl and Davis both hit jumpers and Earl then drilled a 3-pointer to trim the margin to 28-19. The Lady Blues pushed the lead back to 36-22 at the half.

Illinois College would go on to lead by as many as 29 points in the second half before the Vikings rallied. Lawrence closed the game on an 18-2 run to trim the final margin to 13 points as Minogue scored all nine of her points in that stretch and Batac added six.
