COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Lawrence University posted a combined team finish of third place Sunday at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships at French Field House.
Lawrence finished with 1,360 points, and Ohio State was first with 1,590. The Lawrence men were third with 665, and Ohio State took the men's title with 810. The Lawrence women were fourth with 695, and the Buckeyes were first with 795.
Men's epee led the way for the Vikings by taking second. Lawrence posted wins over club teams from Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan before losing 5-1 to Ohio State in the title match.
Men's sabre placed sixth after a 5-2 loss to Northwestern in the fifth-place match. The Vikings opened with a 5-2 win over Illinois before losing to Wayne State. The Vikings then knocked off Indiana 5-4 before falling to the Wildcats.
Men's foil defeated McKendree to take seventh place after losses to Michigan and Michigan State.
The epee team led the Lawrence women as they placed third. The Vikings started with 5-1 victories over Illinois and Michigan State before a 5-0 loss to Ohio State. The Vikings bounced back to beat Michigan State 5-3 in the third-place match.
Women's foil and sabre both placed fifth. In foil, Lawrence topped Oberlin 5-1 before a 5-1 loss to Wayne State, but the Vikings came back to top Denison 5-0 and beat Michigan State 5-2 for fifth place. In sabre, the Vikings split the opening two matches but came back to beat Michigan State 5-1 and topped Indiana 5-1 for fifth.
