Lawrence takes sixth at MFC Championships

Lawrence finished sixth at the MFC Championships.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Lawrence University finished sixth overall Sunday in the team portion of the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships at Ohio State.

The Lawrence women were fifth, and the men were sixth. Lawrence finished with 1,235 points, and Ohio State was first with 1,620.

Women's foil took fourth as the Vikings topped Detroit Mercy 5-1 before a 5-2 victory over Wayne State to reach the semifinals. Eventual champ Ohio State topped the Vikings 5-0, and Lawrence lost to Michigan in the third-place match.

Women's sabre with its contingent of just two fencers finished fifth. The Vikings defeated Cleveland State 5-2 before a 5-1 loss to Northwestern in the quarterfinals. Lawrence then defeated Michigan State 5-3 before downing Wayne State 5-3 in the fifth-place match. 

Women's epee took sixth as the Vikings collected a 5-2 win over Purdue before falling to Ohio State 5-1 in the quarterfinals. The Vikings then defeated Michigan State before a 5-3 loss to the University of Chicago in the fifth-place match.

Men's epee posted the top overall finish by taking third place. The Vikings started with a 5-0 victory over Bowling Green and a 5-1 win over Denison. After a 5-1 loss to Cleveland State in the semifinals, the Vikings came back to beat Chicago 5-3 in the third-place match.

Men's sabre finished sixth as the Vikings topped Michigan State 5-2 before a 5-3 loss to Michigan in the quarterfinals. Lawrence then topped Wisconsin 5-1 before a 5-0 loss to Cleveland State in the fifth-place match. Men's foil finished 14th.
