GRINNELL, Iowa -- Rookie standout Erin Lengel grabbed second place in the 50-yard freestyle Friday to lead Lawrence University on the opening day of the Midwest Conference Championships at Osgood Pool.
Lengel tied for second with Ripon College's Lateesha Hiser in 24.59 seconds as Grinnell College's Madeline Peak edged them for the title in 24.43 seconds. Led by Lengel, the Lawrence women are in third place with 148 points. Grinnell leads with 301.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Lengel, Eryn Blagg, Bridget Duero and Lizzy Garcia grabbed third place in 1:41.01. The 400 medley relay team of Lengel, Blagg, Emmi Zheng and Foley Van Lieshout also placed third in 4:07.50.
On the men's side, rookie Anton Hutchinson led the Vikings by placing third in the 500 freestyle in 4:45.03, and Tom Goldberg took seventh in the 50 freestyle in 21.98 seconds.
Lawrence did place well in the relays and were led by the 200 freestyle relay team of Hutchinson, Goldberg, Akio Yamamoto and Max Stahl, who placed fourth in 1:28.56.
The Lawrence men are in fourth place wit 112 points, and Grinnell leads with 241.
The championships continue through Sunday.
