Records fall as Vikings leave Ripon in their wake

APPLETON, Wis. -- Madeline Smith broke a pair of Lawrence records as the Lawrence University swimming and diving teams split a dual meet with Ripon College on Saturday at Boldt Natatorium.

The Lawrence women posted a 158-62 victory, and the Lawrence men were edged 100-91 by the Red Hawks.

Smith swept the diving, taking the 1-meter with a score of 212 and capturing the 3-meter with a score of 223.75. Smith broke the six-dive record of 210.15 set by Angie Utschig on the 1-meter board back in 2002. Tara Grimscheid's six-dive 3-meter record of 221.90 had stood since 1995.

Two other Lawrence women won two events apiece. Erin Lengel took first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.32 and grabbed the top spot in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.55. Elise Riggle raced to first in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.87 and won the 500 freestyle in 5:43.01.

Other individual winners for the Vikings were Bridget Duero in the 50 freestyle in 26.34 seconds, Sarah Schweickart in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.01, Lizzy Garcia in the 100 freestyle in 57.61 seconds and Caitlyn Lansing in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.08.

The 200 medley relay team of Lengel, Lansing, Schweickart and Garcia took first in 1:55.49.

On the men's side, Charlie Phillips led the way with a pair of wins. Phillips took first in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:54.40 and grabbed first in the 500 freestyle in 5:18.74.

Other winners for the Vikings were Anton Hutchinson in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.82 and Tom Goldberg in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.14. The 200 medley relay team of Goldberg, Hutchinson, Liam Wulfman and Max Stahl grabbed first in 1:42.29.
