Relays lead the way for Vikings on opening day of MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Relay teams led the way for the Lawrence University swimming and diving teams on Friday at the Midwest Conference Championships at Grinnell College.

On the women's side, the 400-yard medley relay team of Erin Lengel, Mizuki Ohama, Emmi Zheng and Lizzy Garcia finished second in 3:58.93, just 1.18 seconds behind the winning squad from Grinnell. The women's 200 freestyle relay of Lengel, Garcia, Mandy Marsh and Bridget Duero finished third in 1:39.09. 

Duero also finished fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:23.05, and teammate Mae Grahs was eighth in 5:28.07. Diver Maddy Smith grabbed a fourth place in the 1-meter event with 345.15 points. 

In the 200 individual medley, Sarah Schweickart was sixth in 2:16.60, and Garcia took seventh in the 50 freestyle in 25.29 seconds.

Lawrence is in third place with 159 points, and Grinnell is first with 321.

On the men's side, the 200 freestyle relay team of Tom Goldberg, Liam Wulfman, Charlie Phillips and Anton Hutchinson grabbed fourth in 1:27.97. The 400 medley relay squad of Wulfman, Goldberg, Phillips and Hutchinson was fourth 3:31.91.

Hutchinson posted the top individual finish for the Vikings by taking fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:43.98.

The Lawrence men are in fifth place with 82 points, and Lake Forest College is first with 245.

The championships continue through Sunday.
