Lengel takes pair of titles and records fall for Vikings at MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Lawrence University women's swimming standout Erin Lengel won a pair of titles on Saturday on day two of the Midwest Conference Championships at Grinnell College.

Lengel was first in the 200-yard freestyle and won in a school-record time of 1:55.39. Teammate Bridget Duero grabbed second place in 1:59.28. Lengel also won the 100 backstroke in a school-record time of 58.62 seconds. She topped Lake Forest College's Fallon Longfield, who finished second in 59.05 seconds. 

Rookie Mizuki Ohama broke the Lawrence record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.30 seconds. Ohama was edged at the wall by Lake Forest's Susan Guo, who took the title in 58.24 seconds. Lawrence's Lizzy Garcia finished seventh in 1:02.38.

Lawrence's Emmi Zheng grabbed second in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.21. Illinois College's Hannah Marks was first in 1:05.61, and Lawrence's Caitlin Lansing was fourth in 1:09.72.

Diver Maddy Smith grabbed the runner-up spot on the 3-meter board. Smith finished with 383.35 points, and Grinnell's Sophie Wojdylo was first with 408.55.

Two Lawrence swimmers placed in the top five in the 400 individual medley. Elise Riggle grabbed third place in 4:45.61, and Sarah Schweickart was fifth in 4:53.36. 

Lawrence's 800 freestyle relay team of Duero, Riggle, Mandy Marsh and Mae Grahs placed second in 8:14.57. Grinnell was first in 7:53.35. Lawrence's 200 medley relay squad of Lengel, Ohama, Zheng and Garcia grabbed thrid in 1:50.31.

The Lawrence women are in third place in the team standings with 426 points, and Grinnell sits in first with 700.

On the men's side, two school records fell, and the Vikings just missed out on an individual title.

Anton Hutchinson took second in the 200 freestyle with a school-record time of 1:43.12, and Grinnell's Ben Grubb finished first in 1:42.13. 

Liam Wulfman broke the school record in the 100 butterfly on his way to a fifth-place finish in 52.11 seconds. Wulfman also finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.59 seconds, and teammate Max Stahl was eighth in 55.19.

Tom Goldberg grabbed a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 59.89 seconds. 

The 200 medley relay team of Stahl, Goldberg, Wulfman and Charlie Phillips grabbed fourth place in 1:37.86. The 800 freestyle relay squad of Stahl, Hutchinson, Phillips and Jordan Spalding took sixth in 7:20.40.

Lawrence is fifth in the team standings with 225 points, and Grinnell leads with 582.

The championships wrap up on Sunday.
