Lengel wins one event, takes two seconds at Pioneer Classic

The Lawrence women finished fourth at the Pioneer Classic.

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Lawrence University swimming standout Erin Lengel won one event and finished second in two others to lead the Vikings at the Pioneer Classic at Grinnell College.

Lengel took the title in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.82 seconds to win by .06 seconds. Lengel also took second in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.76, and she was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:01.45. Lengel also recorded a 10th place in the 200 backstroke in 2:20.28.

The Vikings finished fourth in the team standings with 346 points. Carleton College was first with 1,360.

Diver Maddy Smith grabbed a pair of top-five finishes. Smith was third on the 1-meter board with a score of 370.70, and she took fifth on the 3-meter board with a score of 373.99.

Lawrence also had three relays that placed in the top five.

The 200 freestyle relay of Lengel, Bridget Duero, Mandy Marsh and Leena Meyers placed fourth in 1:43.48. The 400 freestyle relay of Marsh, Lengel, Duero and Laurel Soderquist was fourth in 3:49.14. The 800 freestyle relay of Marsh, Duero, Lengel and Elise Riggle took fifth in 8:37.92.

The Lawrence men took fifth in the team standings with 313 points, and Gustavus Adolphus College was first with 1,630.

Anton Hutchinson led the Vikings with a trio of top-six finishes. Hutchinson took fifth in the 500 freestyle in 4:55.81. Hutchinson also was fifth in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.87. He also took sixth in the 1,650 freestyle in 17:42.06.

The other top individual finishers were Liam Wulfman and Tom Goldberg. Wulfman grabbed 10th in the 100 backstroke in 57.27 seconds, and Goldberg was 10th in the 100 individual medley in 56.33 seconds.

Lawrence also placed five relays in the top 10.

The 800 freestyle relay team of Wulfman, Hutchinson, Charlie Phillips and Davis Wukovits was fourth in 7:39.64. The 400 freestyle relay of Wulfman, Goldberg, Wukovits and Hutchinson was sixth in 3:20.16. The 200 freestyle relay of Goldberg, Wukovits, Wulfman and Hutchinson was seventh in 1:30.64.

The 200 medley relay team fo Wulfman, Goldberg, Phillips and Hutchinson was eighth in 1:41.71, and the same 400 medley relay team was 10th in 3:47.65.
