Smith takes diving title as Lawrence finishes third at Private College Championships

KENOSHA, Wis. -- Lawrence University's Anton Hutchinson won a trio of titles Saturday to lead the Vikings to second place at the Wisconsin Private College Championships at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center.

Hutchinson swam to victories in the 200-yard freestyle, 500 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle and was one of four Lawrence champions on the day. AJ Ulwelling won the 3-meter diving for Lawrence, and Maddy Smith took the 3-meter diving for the Lawrence women.

The Lawrence men were second in the team standings with 126 points. Host Carthage College took the title with 242. The Lawrence women were third with 86 points as Carthage took first with 273.50 and Carroll University was second with 116.50.

Hutchinson grabbed first in the 500 freestyle in 4:53.96 as he won the event by more than 12 seconds. Lawrence's Davis Wukovits was fifth in 5:11.88. Hutchinson swam to victory in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:37.23 as Lawrence teammate Charlie Phillips took second in 18:18.27. Hutchinson also won the 200 freestyle in 1:45.87, and Phillips was fourth in 1:52.31.

Ulwelling took his first career title at the Private College meet with a score of 257.10 on the 3-meter board.

Phillips also took second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.39, and Lawrence's John Berg was fifth in 2:31.59. Wukovits posted the other second place for the Vikings with a runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.88. Phillips also took fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:52.31.

Liam Wulfman posted a pair of top-four finishes as he grabbed third in the 100 backstroke in 57.40 seconds and fourth in the 100 butterfly in 54.93 seconds. Tom Goldberg took fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.16.

Lawrence had two swimmers in the top five in the 400 individual medley as Alex Bemben took fourth in 5:01.03 and Ben Schrag was fifth in 5:08.53.

Lawrence's 200 medley relay team of Hutchinson, Goldberg, Wulfman and Wukovits took second in 1:40.34, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Wukovits, Bemben, Berg and Nathan Gault-Crabb was fourth in 1:36.76.

Smith, a NCAA regional qualifier a season ago, was first on the 3-meter board with a score of 446.70. She also teamed with Andrea Ritziu, Leena Meyers and Laurel Soderquist to take fourth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.61.

Erin Lengel posted a pair of top-three finishes as she took third in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.79 and third in the 100 freestyle in 55.32 seconds.

Mandy Marsh collected three top-five finishes as she was third in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.75, fourth in the 50 freestyle in 26.14 seconds and fifth in the 100 freestyle in 57.10 seconds.

Bridget Duero took home a pair of top-four finishes as she grabbed third in the 500 freestyle in 5:40.39 and fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.77.

The Vikings took two of the top three spots in the 1,650 freestyle as Mae Grahs was second in 19:52.68, and Elise Riggle finished third in 19:53.72. Riggle also grabbed third in the 400 individual medley in 5:05.95.

The 200 medley relay team of Marsh, Lengel, Duero and Soderquist took fourth in 1:59.50. Soderquist also posted a fifth place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.29.
