Runner-up relay paces Vikings on opening day of MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Lawrence University women's 200-yard freestyle relay team narrowly missed a title on Friday at the Midwest Conference Championships at Osgood Pool.

Lawrence finished second in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Erin Lengel, Mae Grahs, Mandy Marsh and Bridget Duero posted a time of 1:39.36. It took a meet record time of 1:36.38 by Lake Forest College to beat the Vikings. 

Lengel led off the relay and swam a school record time in the 50 freestyle of 24.07 seconds.

The Lawrence women grabbed a pair of top-five individual finishes on Friday. Marsh took fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.89 seconds, and diver Maddy Smith was fourth on the 3-meter board with a score of 376.75.

Lawrence had two finishers in the top eight in the 500 freestyle as Grahs placed seventh in 5:29.11 and Duero was eighth in 5:30.42.

The 400 medley relay team of Duero, Elise Riggle, Alena Hanson and Laurel Soderquist took sixth in 4:23.43.

The Lawrence women are third in the team standings with 123 points, and Lake Forest leads with 325.

On the men's side, Anton Hutchinson was the top individual finisher as he took fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:44.33. AJ Ulwelling placed eighth on the 1-meter board with a score of 217.75.

Both men's relays placed in the top five. The 200 freestyle relay team of Tom Goldberg, Charlie Phillips, Davis Wukovits and Alex Bemben was fourth in 1:29.73. The 400 medley relay team of Goldberg, Phillips, Hutchinson and Liam Wulfman was fifth in 3:33.97.

Lawrence is fifth in the team standings with 96 points, and Grinnell College leads with 246.
