Vikings secure pair of consolation doubles titles at MWC Championships

MADISON, Wis. -- Two Lawrence University doubles teams took home consolation titles Saturday at the Midwest Conference Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Lindsay Holsen and Katie Nottberg at No. 1 and El Goblirsch and Annie Harincar at No. 2 both battled back to take home consolation titles.

Alexis Shannon and Lindsey Lucas won an opening-round match before being eliminated in the championship quarterfinals. After Lucas and Shannon beat Ripon College's Carly Wesner and Katelyn Peroutka 8-6 in the opening round, the dropped an 8-2 decision to Grinnell College in the quarterfinals.

Holsen and Nottberg fell 8-4 in the championship quarterfinals but then won two consolation matches to take that title. Holsen and Nottberg beat Sally Hixson and Lisa Noggle of Illinois College 8-3 in the semfinals and then topped Knox College's Miranda Corbett and Bhumika Gupta 8-6 in the consolation final.

Harincar and Goblirsch dropped an 8-4 decision to Cornell College in the championship quarterfinal but also won a pair of consolation matches. Lawrence's duo dropped Ripon's MacKenzie Warner and Rachel Hicks 8-5 in the semifinals and then topped Monmouth College's Natalie Curtis and Morgan Holle 8-4 in the final.
