Holsen, Nottberg takes consolation singles titles at MWC Championships

MADISON, Wis. -- Lawrence University women's tennis players Lindsay Holsen and Katie Nottberg took home consolation singles titles Sunday at the Midwest Conference Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Holsen was the consolation winner at No. 1 and Nottberg took the title at No. 3.

Holsen lost her championship quarterfinal match to St. Norbert College's Jordyn Lawatsch 6-2, 6-1, but stormed back in the consolation bracket. Holsen beat Courtney Olsen of Ripon College 8-1 in the semifinals and then downed Sally Hixson of Illinois College 8-0.

It was the same road for Nottberg, who dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Lake Forest College's Leeza Bodnar in the championship quarterfinals. Nottberg then topped Ariel Rhoades of Illinois College 8-1 in the consolation semifinals before stopping St. Norbert's Lauren Paulson 8-5 in the final.

At No. 2 singles, Annie Harincar was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Lisa Noggle of Illinois College in the first round but was eliminated with a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Grinnell College's Amelia Cogan in the championship quarterfinals. Lawrence's El Goblirsch followed the same path at No. 4 singles where she beat Beloit College's Hayden Lamphere 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round. Goblirsch was eliminated with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Lake Forest's Tyranny Miller in the championship quarterfinals.

At Nos. 5 and 6 singles, Lindsey Lucas and Tillie Teske were both eliminated in the consolation semifinals.
