Four Vikings reach semis at MWC Championships

No. 1 singles player Margot Connor was one of four Vikings to reach the semifinals of the MWC Championships.

MADISON, Wis. -- Four Lawrence University women's tennis singles players reached the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Championships on Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Margot Connor, Lawrence's No. 1 player, reached the semifinals along with No. 3 player Emma Koppa, No. 5 player Amelia Watson and No. 6 player Jacki Healy.

Connor started her day with a 6-3, 6-4 quarterfinal victory over Knox College's Bhumika Gupta. Connor then lost to Lake Forest College's Julie Lord in the semifinals, and Lord went on to win the title. Koppa topped Monmouth College's Rachael Leifheit 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals before a loss to Lake Forest's Leeza Bodnar in the semifinals. 

Watson battled to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Cornell College's Amanda Dragon in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Izzy Green of Grinnell College in the semifinals. Healy also went three sets in the quarterfinals as she beat Cornell's Natalie Brandt 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. Healy was then defeated by Lake Forest's Katie Wegrecki in the semifinals.

At No. 2, Lauren Aturaliya lost in straight sets in the quarterfinals but bounced back to beat Knox's Himani Patel 8-0 in the consolation semifinals. Illinois College's Sally Hixson then beat Aturaliya in the consolation final. At No. 4, Morgan Fisher topped Ripon College's Tamera Holland 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. Fisher then lost to eventual champion Sophia De Los Reyes of Grinnell in the quarterfinals.

Lawrence will have to wait for its shot at the Midwest Conference Tournament title. The Vikings will face Grinnell in the four-team tournament in April.
