Sedall wins steeplechase to lead Lawrence at Viking Invitational

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University track and field standout Will Nichols won the triple jump and the 400 meters Saturday at the Viking Invitational at Whiting Field.

Nichols leaped to the top spot in the triple jump with a distance of 41 feet, 7 inches. He won by nearly two feet over the second-place finisher. Nichols also ran to first in the 400 in 50.84 seconds to beat St. Norbert College's Gregory Bernasek, who was second in 53.78 seconds.

Nichols also ran on the 4x400 relay team that grabbed first place. He teamed with Ethan Simmons, Alex DuVall and Mik Patel to take first in 3:31.41. Lawrence's 4x100 team of Simmons, DuVall, Nichols and Tom Goldberg was third in 44.67 seconds.

Ben Schaefer led a 1-2 Lawrence sweep in the 5,000 as he won the event in 16:52.31, and Josh Janusiak was second in 16:52.48. Patel also took second in the 800 in 2:01.60, and Cullen Allard was second in the 1,500 in 4:15.70.

Gabe Baker grabbed a pair of second-place finishes as he took the runner-up spot in the discus at 123-5 and in the hammer throw at 109-4.

Lawrence finished second in the team standings with 129 points, and St. Norbert was first with 224.

Christina Sedall led the Lawrence women's contingent by cruising to a win in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 12:23.68.

Nora Robinson grabbed second for the Vikings in the 100 meters in 13.39 seconds. Mikaela Hintz ran to second in the 200 meters in 26.86 seconds, and Alyssa Kuss was third in the 400 in 1:05.65.

Hannah Kinzer ran to second in the 1,500 in 5:11.18, and Kate Kilgus took third in the 800 meters in 2:28.41. Hallie Sogin picked up a runner-up finish in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.56.

The 4x400 relay team of Hintz, Kuss, Janey Degnan and Emily Hoeft finished second in 4:15.86, and the 4x100 team of Robinson, Fanita Robins, Hintz and Imani Duhe was third in 52.72 seconds.

Lawrence was third in the team standings with 89 points, and St. Norbert took first with 324.5.
