GRINNELL, Iowa -- Lawrence University track and field star Joe Kortenhof grabbed his second title at the Midwest Conference Championships as he raced to victory in the 3,000 meters on Saturday.
Kortenhof cruised to the win in the 3,000 by more than eight seconds with a time of 8:43.37, and Grinnell's Matthew Lieberman was second in 8:51.75. This was the second career conference track title for Kortenhof, a senior.
Lawrence's 4x400-meter relay team raced to a third-place finish. The team of Ethan Simmons, Tyler Antoine, Will Nichols and Mik Patel took third in 3:31.15.
Three of those relay team members also placed in individual events. Patel was seventh in the 800 in 2:02.45, Nichols took seventh in the 60 meters in 7.22 seconds and Antoine was eighth in the 60 hurdles in 9.19 seconds.
Lawrence's distance medley relay team of Simmons, Aaron Arthur, Julian Garcia and Billy Daniels took sixth in 11:19.71.
In the field events, Gabe Baker placed eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 47 feet, 9 inches.
The Lawrence men were seventh in the team standings with 46 points, and Monmouth won the title with 188.5.
On the women's side, the top individual finisher was Emily Hoeft, who placed eighth in the triple jump at 34-2.75. Hoeft also teamed with Eden Sorensen, Fiona Shine and Mikaela Hintz to take fourth in the 4x400 relay in 4:12.34.
Lawrence was ninth in the team standings with 10 points, and St. Norbert won the title with 183.
