RIPON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team won the opening two sets Saturday against Saint Mary's (Minn.) University, but the Vikings were forced to a fifth set before downing the Cardinals at the Red Hawks Invitational.
Lawrence (5-10) defeated Saint Mary's 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 13-25, 15-13. Lawrence's Arianna Neumeyer was named to the all-tournament team.
Rookie Alyssa Peterson paced the Vikings with 12 kills, and Neumeyer added 10. Neumeyer, Cyra Bammer and Katie Kumbalek had 18 digs apiece to lead the Lawrence defense. Lawrence's Colleen Nowlan posted seven blocks, and Neumeyer had six.
Lawrence built its lead by winning the first two points of the first set and then winning the final three points of the second set to go up 2-0. Saint Mary's then won the third and fourth sets to set up the decisive fifth set.
The Vikings scored the first four points of the final set, but the Cardinals rallied and eventually took a 13-11 lead. A Saint Mary's attack error, followed by kills from Claire Vinopal and Arianna Cohen, put the Vikings up 14-13, and Lawrence won it when the Cardinals were whistled for a ball handling error.
