Carroll hangs to down Vikings in five sets

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Carroll University volleyball team held on for a 3-2 non-conference victory Thursday over Lawrence University at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Pioneers won 24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12.

Dana Voltolina led Carroll (7-8) with 12 kills, and Amanda Hahn picked up 32 digs.

Arianna Neumeyer paced Lawrence (5-11) with 11 kills, 20 digs and seven blocks, and Arianna Cohen added nine kills. Rookie Alyssa Peterson picked up eight kills, and Rachael Wuensch added seven.

Lauren Ray led the Vikings with 19 assists, and Sydney Nelson picked up 16.

Lawrence closed out a tight first set as a kill by Cohen and a Carroll attack error put the Vikings up early. Carroll won the next two sets, but Lawrence tied the match by winning the fourth set. The Vikings led the fourth set 23-18 before Carroll trimmed the margin to 23-21. Back-to-back kills from Neumeyer closed out the fourth set for Lawrence.

In the fifth, Carroll pulled out to an early advantage and built a 13-10 lead. Back-to-back kills from Neumeyer closed the margin to 13-12 before a kill from Cassidy Mrotek and a ball handling error on the Vikings closed out the match for the Pioneers.
