APPLETON, Wis. -- Arianna Cohen pounded out 19 kills Saturday to lead the Lawrence University volleyball team to a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory over Illinois College at Alexander Gymnasium.
Lawrence defeated the Lady Blues 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 26-24.
Arianna Neumeyer had another great all-around match for the Vikings (6-12, 1-1 MWC) with 11 kills and 28 digs. Cohen, who also had three blocks, piled up 19 kills and just one error in 34 attempts for a sizzling .529 hitting percentage.
Ali Pankey paced Illinois College (6-10, 1-1) with 15 kills, and Elizabeth Ganley had 43 assists and 25 digs.
Lawrence pulled away late in the opening set to build a 20-16 lead, and the Lady Blues never got closer than three points after that. The second set was tied at 18-18 before two Illinois College errors, an ace from Neumeyer and a Colleen Nowlan kill put the Vikings up 22-18. A Cohen kill finished off the set and put Lawrence up 2-0.
Illinois College went on an 11-0 run in the third set to lead 16-5, but Lawrence roared back. The Vikings went on a 17-6 run to close to 23-22, but a kill from MacKenzie Heinz and a Lawrence attack error gave Illinois College the set.
Lawrence led 23-20 in the fourth set after Cohen and Pankey traded a pair of kills. The Lady Blues managed to tie it at 24-24 after a pair of Lawrence errorss, but Lawrence closed out the match with a Neumeyer kill and a block from Neumeyer and Nowlan.
