Vikings topple Monmouth in five sets

MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team won the final two sets Friday to down Monmouth College 3-2 in a Midwest Conference match at Glennie Gymnasium.

Lawrence defeated the Scots 21-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 15-9.

Arianna Neumeyer and Arianna Cohen paced the Vikings (7-12, 2-1 MWC) with 12 kills apiece, and Rachael Wuensch added eight. 

Cyra Bammer led Lawrence with 25 digs, and Neumeyer added 21 digs, two aces and four blocks. Colleen Nowlan led Lawrence with five blocks, and Cohen added four.

Monmouth (6-13, 1-2) had a chance to close out the match in four sets, but the Vikings seized control late in the fourth. With the set tied 17-17, the Vikings ripped off six consecutive points, including a pair of aces from Addisyn Gerber, to pull away. Lawrence closed out the set with a Cohen kill to tie the match at 2-2.

Lawrence jumped on the Scots in the fifth set as Cohen picked up three kills to help the Vikings forge a 7-2 lead. The Scots never got closer than three points the rest of the way, and Lawrence closed out the match with a solo block by Cohen.
