APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lake Forest College volleyball team won two close sets to open the match Friday and went on to a 3-1 Midwest Conference victory over Lawrence University at Alexander Gymnasium.
The Foresters won 25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 25-18.
Grace Larson powered to 23 kills and collected 15 digs to pace Lake Forest. Olivia Rhodes picked up 45 assists and had 12 digs for the Foresters.
Arianna Neumeyer was impressive for the Vikings as she had a team-high 18 kills to go with 15 digs and a pair of blocks.
The Vikings trailed 17-8 in the opening set, but Lawrence went on a 12-4 run, capped by a Neumeyer kill and a Larson attack error, to cut the lead to 22-20. A kill from Hannah Hornacek finally stemmed the tide for Lake Forest, and the Foresters got a kill from Isabel Donnelly and a Lawrence attack error to close out the set.
Lawrence trailed 18-13 in the second set, but went on a 6-1 run to tie the match at 19-19 on Emily Hoeft's kill. The Foresters stretched the lead to 24-21 before kills from Galassini and Neumeyer trimmed the margin to 24-23. Donnelly came up with another kill to close out the set.
It was back and forth in the third set and all tied at 24-24 before an attack error from Larson gave Lawrence a 25-24 lead. The Vikings closed out the set on an attack error by Rhodes. In the final set, Lake Forest went on an 8-3 run midway through the set to grab an 18-11 advantage. The Vikings rallied and trimmed the margin to 22-18 on a Galassini kill, but two kills from Larson and another by Rhodes closed out the match.
