Caitlin Chambers picked up a team-high eight kills for the Vikings in the win over Marian.

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team downed Marian University 3-0 on Wednesday night in a nonconference match at Alexander Gymnasium.

The Vikings won 25-18, 26-24, 25-23 to get their first win of the season and the first for new head coach Kim Falkenhagen.

Caitlin Chambers led the Vikings (1-4) with eight kills, and Emily Hoeft, Sophia Galassini and Elizabeth Liebau added five kills apiece. Galassini also collected a match-high three aces.

Tamia Cephus paced Lawrence with 12 assists, and she picked up 10 digs. Averie Miller added 10 assists and nine digs for the Vikings, and Laurice Lavajo had a team-high 11 digs.

Lawrence pulled away midway through the opening set. The Vikings trailed 9-8 before scoring eight of the next nine points to grab a 16-10 advantage. The Sabres closed to 20-15 before Lawrence won seven of the next 10 points to win the set.

Lawrence led by as many as four points in the second set, the last time at 18-14, before Marian (0-4) rallied. The Sabres tied the match at 22-22 and it was tied at 24-24 before a pair of Marian attack errors gave Lawrence the set.

The Vikings trailed 17-14 in the third set before kills by Chambers and Galassini, sandwiched around a pair of Marian errors, gave the Vikings an 18-17 lead. The match was tied at 23-23 before a kill from Liebau and a Marian attack error lifted Lawrence to the set and match.

Lawrence returns to action this weekend at the UW-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic.
