Vikings fall to Carroll

Lawrence dropped a four-set decision to visiting Carroll.

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 nonconference decision to Carroll University on Saturday at Alexander Gymnasium.

Carroll won the match 26-24, 25-15, 18-25, 25-8.

Sophia Galassini paced Lawrence's attack with eight kills, and Elizabeth Liebau and Jordan Adamson added seven kills apiece. Averie Miller piled up 29 assists, and Alyssa Sorensen had a match-high 14 digs for the Vikings.

Lawrence trailed by three late in the opening set at 21-18, but the Vikings battled back. Lawrence tied it at 22-22 on a kill by Miller, and Lawrence then fought off a set point to tie it at 24-24. A kill by Sydney Wilkins and a block by the Pioneers gave Carroll the victory in the opening set.

Carroll took an early lead in the second set at 10-3, but the Vikings fought all the way back to 18-15. Carroll then won a lengthy point with a kill from Jennilyn Joy Cave and rattled off seven consecutive points to take the second set.

The Vikings came out strong in the third set and built a 15-9 lead on Laurice Lavajo's ace. An ace by Caitlin Chambers and an error by Cave put the lead to 19-12 and Carroll didn't get closer than four points the rest of the way. The Pioneers then raced out to a 13-1 lead in the fourth set used that big early advantage to close out the match.
