Vikings roll past Ripon in straight sets

RIPON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 Midwest Conference victory over Ripon College on Friday at Weiske Gymnasium.

Lawrence downed the Red Hawks 25-23, 25-18, 26-24.

Elizabeth Liebau pounded out a match-high 15 kills and posted a .312 hitting percentage for the Vikings. Jordan Adamson added 10 kills, and Sophia Galassini had nine for Lawrence.

Setter Averie Miller picked up 36 assists and nine digs for the Vikings. Lawrence's Laurice Lavajo had a team-best 15 digs, and Caitlin Chambers added 11.

The first set was tight throughout, and Ripon led 21-19 before an Adamson kill and a Ripon attack error tied the match at 21-21. The Vikings then got kills by Liebau, Chambers, Liebau and Galassini to close out the opening set.

Lawrence built an early five-point edge in the second set before Ripon closed to 14-12. The Vikings then finished the set on an 11-6 run to take the set.

The third set was another close one, and Ripon built an 18-15 advantage. A kill from Liza Stalcup and two more from Liebau tied the set at 18-18. Ripon came back to grab a 24-22 lead, but Lawrence finished strong. Kills from Liebau and Chambers, followed by a Galassini block, gave Lawrence a 25-24 lead. Galassini then got the final kill to close out the set and the match.

Lawrence returns to action Saturday when the Vikings host Beloit College.
