Vikings start strong but can't hold off Trine

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's hockey team got off to a strong start Saturday against Trine University, but the Thunder came back to notch a 6-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory at the Appleton Ice Center.
Lawrence got on the board first when Sofia Alvarez took a pass from Maggie MacNeil and beat Trine goaltender Emily Nettesheim at the 7:40 mark of the opening period. It was the first collegiate goal for Alvarez.
The Vikings nearly held onto that advantage to the first intermission, but Trine got a goal at the 17:02 mark to tie it at 1-1 after one period.
The Thunder grabbed the lead with a goal six minutes into the second period, and then used the power play to pull away. Trine scored a power-play goal midway through the second for a 3-1 edge, and then added three more power-play goals in the third.
Trine went 4-for-9 on the power play, and the Vikings were 0-for-1.
Nettesheim made six saves to get the win, and Charlie Prior stopped 33 shots for the Vikings.
