APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University women's hockey team put together a solid effort Friday, but Concordia University Wisconsin pulled out a 3-1 nonconference win over the Vikings at the Champion Center.
The Vikings scored first, but Concordia got two goals in a span of 45 seconds and that was the difference.
Lawrence got on the board with 5:15 left in the opening period when
Sofia Alvarez scored her third goal of the season off a pass from
Lauren Askenazy.Â
Concordia struck back quickly when Makayla Spejcher scored with 4:09 left in the first to tie it at 1-1. The Falcons then took the lead 45 seconds later on Ella Tuccitto's goal for a 2-1 edge.
The score stayed that way until late in the third when Concordia's Amanda Bauer added an insurance goal with 6:41 remaining.Â
Lawrence pulled goaltender Sara Dobrzynski with more than three minutes remaining and forced Concordia goaltender Kami McCardle to make multiple saves to preserve the advantage.
Dobrzynski was solid in net and made several outstanding saves for the Vikings. She finished with 31 saves, and Bauer stopped 25 shots.
The game featured just three penalties with the Vikings going 0-for-2 on the power play and the Falcons were 0-for-1.
The teams finish the two-game series Saturday at Concordia.
