APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence (0-2-0) fell to the College of St. Scholastica (2-0-0) by a score of 3-1 on Saturday evening. Despite a tied faceoff percentage and strong goaltending with 28 saves, the Vikings were unable to overcome the Saints' special teams, which contributed both a power-play and a shorthanded goal.
The first period commenced with a faceoff between Victoria Nelson and
Emma Perry, won by the Vikings. The Saints quickly took control, with Gabby Gamst opening the scoring at 2:20, assisted by Paige Blattner and Emma Laming. St. Scholastica capitalized on their offensive pressure, outshooting Lawrence, with several attempts saved by
Ella Sciborski. The Vikings faced challenges with two penalties, resulting in power plays for the Saints, but they successfully killed both. Late in the period, the Vikings gained a power play opportunity when Hanley Block was penalized for slashing, but they were unable to convert before the intermission. St. Scholastica led 1-0 at the end of the period.
In the second period, Lawrence took the lead at 6:00 when
Meg Landman scored an even-strength goal, assisted by
Emmerson Berger. The Saints responded with a strong offensive push, but Sciborski made several key saves to keep the score in favor of Lawrence. However, at 16:50, Nelson capitalized on a shorthanded opportunity, scoring the eventual game-winning goal for St. Scholastica, assisted by Bailey Coole. The period concluded with the Saints holding a 2-1 lead, despite the Vikings' power play efforts.
St. Scholastica secured a goal in the third period to maintain their lead against Lawrence. At 16:42, Sophie Parendo scored on the power play with assists from Lyndi Schubert and Coole, increasing the Saints' advantage to 3-1. The Vikings had opportunities with multiple power plays but were unable to capitalize on them. Sciborski made several key saves to keep Lawrence in the game, but the Vikings couldn't find the back of the net in the final period.
Landman scored one goal and maintained an 80% faceoff win percentage, winning 12 out of 15 faceoffs. Berger contributed with an assist and achieved a 100% faceoff win rate, securing victory in her sole faceoff attempt.
Kate Boberg also excelled at faceoffs, winning her only attempt for a perfect 100% faceoff percentage. Sciborski, in goal, recorded 28 saves for the game.
