What Being a Viking Means To Me:
I have worked with youth and teams in various capacities ever since graduating from Lawrence and so I spend a lot of time thinking about my own experience, my own teammates, and our teams’ various successes and failures. Being a Lawrence Viking changed my life by instilling in me a strong work ethic, leadership abilities, resilience, planning skills, and improving my teamwork and communication skills. And part of this is nostalgia, I’m sure, but the farther I get from my Lawrence experience the more impressed I am with the way our teams worked hard, had fun, always wanted to get better (even when we were barely winning any games at all), and really just enjoyed being around each other and the game. We had some drama, every team does, but I rarely saw it spill onto the field. When the season ended too early, we were out there for the next three weeks playing small-sided games until it got dark, simply because we missed the routine of practice and getting to play soccer with each other. I remain incredibly grateful for the experience of playing at Lawrence University.
