Big third quarter leads Lakeland past Lawrence

PLYMOUTH, Wis. -- The Lakeland College women's basketball team pulled away in the third quarter Tuesday and went on to a 66-53 nonconference victory over Lawrence University at Woltzen Gymnasium.

Kenya Earl scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down six rebounds to pace Lawrence (0-3). Olivia Hoesley added 13 points and five rebounds, and Nicole Cummins had 10 points and five rebounds for the Vikings.

Amanda Majewski paced Lakeland (3-2) with 17 points and was one of four Muskies to score in double figures.

Lawrence trailed 17-7 after the opening quarter, but the Vikings went on a 16-3 run to open the second period. Erin Hill hit a pair of three-pointers, Cummins added five points and Hoesley buried a triple to cap the outburst and give Lawrence a 23-20 lead with 5:30 left in the first half.

The Vikings built their biggest lead at 28-22 on Elena Gonzales' jumper with 2:08 left, but Miranda Jacobson and Majewski both hit three-pointers to force a 28-28 tie at the half.

Lakeland then opened the second half by scoring eight consecutive points, including four by Jacobson, to take a 36-28 lead. Lawrence immediately trimmed the lead back to 36-33 after a three-pointer by Hoesley and a jumper from Earl.

Momentum swung back to the Muskies as Lakeland scored the next seven points, the final four coming from Megan Will, to grab a 45-33 lead. Lawrence never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
