Box Score MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The Monmouth College football team scored 31 first-half points Saturday en route to a 34-0 non-conference win over Lawrence University at Zorn Memorial Stadium.
Monmouth (3-1) scored in the game's opening minute and took control with touchdowns on three consecutive drives in the second quarter.
Deandre Wright carried 10 times for 86 yards and a touchdown, and Joshua Mckenzie had four carries for 75 yards and a score for the Scots. Monmouth quarterback Hayden Nelson completed 18-of-35 passes for 240 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
The Monmouth defense limited Lawrence (1-3) to just 49 yards. D'Andre Weaver had five carries for 20 yards for the Vikings, and quarterback Philip Santiago was 2-for-8 passing for 13 yards.
A bright spot for the Lawrence defense was cornerback Terrell Myers, who had a team-high seven tackles, an interception and two pass breakups.
Monmouth scored just 23 seconds into the game when Wright bolted 58 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The Scots added a field goal midway through the first quarter but took control in the second.
On the opening possession of the second quarter, Nelson hit Wesley Anderson with a 35-yard scoring pass for a 17-0 lead. After the Vikings went three-and-out, Mckenzie took a handoff on the next play and ran 60 yards for a score and a 24-0 lead. After another three-and-out, Nelson connected with Nathan Graham three plays later for a 36-yard scoring pass and a 31-0 lead.
All the Scots could muster after the break was a 33-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Lawrence only penetrated Monmouth territory once during the game. Lawrence's Dan Rothbauer was forced to punt 13 times, including a 50-yarder, and averaged 40 yards.
Lawrence opens Midwest Conference North Division play next Saturday when it travels to the University of Chicago.
