Lawrence falls to Lady Blues in season finale

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- A big second half was the difference on Saturday as the Lawrence University women's basketball team fell 74-58 to Illinois College at Sherman Gymnasium.

Lawrence led by five points at the half, but the Lady Blues rode a big third quarter to the lead and went on to the victory in the season finale for both teams.

Leah Reeves led Lawrence with 14 points as she hit 7-of-10 shots from the floor, and she added five rebounds. Arianna Neumeyer came off the bench to add nine points, four rebounds and two steals. Lawrence star Kenya Earl was limited to eight points, but she grabbed a team-best nine rebounds to go with two assists, two blocks and two steals.

Sydney Lett led Illinois College with 16 points, and Brielle Greenleaf had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Lawrence (6-18, 3-15 MWC) put together a solid first half but trailed 25-21 with nearly five minutes left in the second quarter. Shonell Benjamin's three-point play sparked a 10-1 run to finish the period. Earl picked up four points in that burst, and Neumeyer added three as the Vikings led 31-26 at the break.

The Lady Blues (10-15, 6-12) grabbed the lead in the third quarter, and after Karina Herrera hit a 3-pointer for the Vikings, Illinois College was up 44-40. Illinois College finished the quarter on a 7-3 run and led 51-43 after three.

Illinois College led by as many as 11 points early in the fourth quarter, but the Vikings got back-to-back 3-pointers from Neumeyer and Liz Jonjak to trim the lead to 57-51 with 5:39 remaining.

The Lady Blues pushed the lead back to 10, but baskets from Reeves and Maggie Gallagher cut the margin to 61-55. That's as close as the Vikings would get as Illinois College finished the game on an 11-3 run to seal the victory.
