Vikings top Beloit, edge closer to MWC Tournament berth

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University men's soccer team edged Beloit College 3-2 on Wednesday at Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl and edged closer to a berth in the Midwest Conference Tournament.
The win gives Lawrence 15 points with its 5-2-0 conference record. A win or a tie against Monmouth College on Saturday in the regular season finale would put Lawrence in the four-team tournament for the first time since 2011.  The Vikings (8-9-0 overall) can finish as high as third place in the regular season standings.
Konstantinos Fardellas had two goals and an assist for Lawrence, and Rodrigo Angulo had a goal and an assist.
Lawrence pulled out to a two-goal lead in the second half before Beloit (4-9-1, 2-5-0) made it interesting.
The match was tied 1-1 early in the second half when Fardellas took a pass from Mark Todd with Beloit goalkeeper Brock Bidwell out of position. Fardellas got the ball past Bidwell and a Beloit defender for a goal at the 54:25 mark to put the Vikings up 2-1.
Lawrence stretched the lead to 3-1 with the help of some quality passing just a few minutes later. Jack Morrissey moved the ball from midfield to Fardellas, who then connected with Angulo. Angulo's shot beat Bidwell at the 58:58 mark and the Vikings were up by two.
Edgar Caracoza scored for Beloit in the 68th minute, but Lawrence turned the Bucs away over the final 12 minutes to seal the victory. Lawrence posted a 62-38 percent edge in possession for the match.
The Vikings got the scoring started early when Fardellas took a pass from Angulo and deftly lifted the ball over the head of Bidwell and into the back of the net at the 6:43 mark for a 1-0 edge. The score stayed that way until Patrick Casola tied it for Beloit at the 49:24 mark.
Lawrence goalkeeper Hunter Lanton made four saves to pick up the win, and Bidwell had one save for Beloit.
Lawrence wraps up the regular season on Saturday when the Vikings host Monmouth in the Banta Bowl.
