Vikings can't overcome big fourth quarter by Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. -- A big fourth quarter proved too much to overcome Saturday as the Lawrence University football team dropped a 56-28 Midwest Conference decision to Knox College in the Knosher Bowl.
The game was tight through three quarters, but Knox exploded for 28 points in the final quarter to pull away.
Lawrence quarterback D'Andre Weaver had another big game as he completed 22-of-38 passes for 339 yards, three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Weaver also ran 13 times for 52 yards.
Weaver's favorite target was Tanner Morris, who had a huge day as he caught eight passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Logan Olson caught seven passes for 103 yards for the Vikings. Jaidon Bond grabbed four passes for 22 yards, and Cameron Wicks had three catches for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Linebacker Eder Bellegarde posted another double-digit tackle game for the Vikings (2-6, 1-6 MWC) as he made a game-high 13 tackles, including 1.0 sacks. Lawrence safety Terrell Myers had eight stops, including 1.0 tackles for loss.
Knox's triple-option offense was led by Derrick Jackson, who had eight carries for 111 yards and a touchdown. Hunter Anderson carried 16 times for 98 yards for the Prairie Fire (3-4, 3-4).
Knox jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first half, but the Vikings got on the board when Weaver connected with Morris on a 67-yard scoring pass early in the second quarter to cut the margin in half.
Lawrence then marched 65 yards in nine plays to tie the game in the second quarter. Prince Mukuna piled in from a yard out for a touchdown and a 14-14 tie with 2:18 left in the first half. Knox struck back with a touchdown on a 17-yard scoring pass with 43 seconds remaining and took a 21-14 lead at the break.
The Vikings quickly tied the game in the third quarter. Lawrence got a 10-yard scoring pass from Weaver to Morris to tie the score at 21-21 with 9:55 left in the third quarter.
The score stayed that way until Knox converted a fourth-down play with a 44-yard scoring pass to Ethan Rolph-Jones to take a 28-21 lead with 21 seconds left in the third quarter.
Knox scored on its next two possessions to pull out to a 42-21 lead before the Vikings put together a long scoring drive. Lawrence moved 90 yards in nine plays, and Weaver found Wicks on an 11-yard scoring pass to cut the lead to 42-28.
The Prairie Fire then got a 60-yard touchdown run and an interception return for a touchdown to seal the victory.
Lawrence hits the road again next Saturday when the Vikings travel to the University of Chicago.
