Thrilling OT win pushes Lawrence into MWC Tournament

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University women's soccer player Emma Vasconez picked an opportune time to score her first collegiate goal.
Vasconez scored in the 105th minute Saturday to lift the Vikings to a 1-0 double-overtime Midwest Conference victory over Monmouth College on Ron Roberts Field at the Banta Bowl.
Lawrence needed a win over the Scots to get into the Midwest Conference Tournament, but all Monmouth needed was a tie to punch its ticket to the four-team tourney.
The Scots nearly scored in the first half, but Madison Walker's shot hit the post. Lawrence had multiple scoring chances, including shots by Cambrie Rickard and Jackie Blake that narrowly missed the mark.
Once the game went to overtime, the Scots packed in the defense, but Lawrence's best scoring opportunity came after a throw in. With more than five minutes left, Sophia Morin took the throw, and a scramble ensued in front of the net.
Vasconez came away with the ball and punched it past Monmouth goalkeeper Lea Selquist at 104:50 to set off a wild celebration.
Lawrence goalkeeper Sarah Yochem made six saves to pick up the shutout. Yochem's eight shutouts this season breaks the school record of seven held by Lawrence Hall of Famers Katie Wilkin and Kim Geiser.
Lawrence is the fourth seed in the tournament and will face top seed Knox College in the semifinals. Lake Forest College takes on Beloit College in the other semifinal. The tournament winner receives an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The tourney berth is a significant milestone for a Lawrence program on the rebound. Head coach Joe Sagar took over a struggling program in 2018 and the team didn't win a game that first season. Lawrence now has its first winning season since 2009 and its first berth in the league tournament since 2011.
