It didn't take long for the season to get off on the right foot for the Lawrence University men's hockey team.
The Vikings scored one minute into their season opener Friday night at the Appleton Ice Center and kept it rolling for a 7-3 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over the College of St. Scholastica.
Seven different players scored for Lawrence (1-0-0, 1-0-0 NCHA), and
Alex Mosquera was outstanding between the pipes for the Vikings as he made 34 saves to collect the victory.
 Â
Brandon Halvorsen got things started when a turnover gave him a scoring opportunity, and he converted for a 1-0 lead exactly 60 seconds into the game. The Vikings made it 2-0 on
Jordan Cooper's shot over the glove of St. Scholastica goaltender Nick Trenciansky found the back of the net with 4:11 left in the opening period.
Lawrence extended its lead to 3-0 when
Will Robertson scored off a pass from
Tyler Jensen midway through the second period. St. Scholastica (1-5-0, 0-3-0) got on the board less than a minute later to cut the margin to 3-1, but the Vikings responded. Lawrence's
Zach Lodes scored off an assist from rookie
Oliver DeCroock for a 4-1 advantage with 6:45 left in the second.Â
The Saints closed the margin to 4-2 on Tyler Hinterser's second goal of the night at the 7:32 mark of the third. Lawrence then cashed in on the power play when DeCroock scored off a pass from
Charles Stewart for a 5-2 edge with 7:08 left. Lawrence's
Zach Olen added another goal with 5:34 left to push the margin to 6-2 and seal the victory.
The Saints cut the margin to 6-3, but
Ivan Galaguzov's empty-net goal with 1:31 left completed the scoring.
The Vikings finished 2-for-6 on the power play, and the Saints were 1-for-4.
Lawrence goes for the series sweep when it travels to St. Scholastica on Sunday evening.
