Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Vikings can't overcome big third period by Marian

The Lawrence University women's hockey team battled hard for two periods Friday at the Appleton Family Ice Center, but a big third period led Marian University to a 6-2 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory.
Lawrence scored the game's first goal and led after the opening period. The Vikings were down by just one at 2-1 after two periods, but Marian scored three times in the opening six minutes of the third period to seize the momentum.
Lauren Askenazy and Delaney Kingsland both had a goal and an assist for the Vikings (0-3-0, 0-3-0 NCHA). Lawrence defenseman Lauren Moravchik also grabbed her first career point with an assist.
Askenazy put Lawrence ahead with 4:46 left in the opening period when she took a pass on the back door from Kingsland and scored for a 1-0 lead. Lawrence maintained that advantage into the second period, but Jenna Grosdidier scored a short-handed goal six minutes into the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Grosdidier then put Marian ahead 2-1 with 3:04 left in the second with her second goal of the night.
The Sabres (1-5-0, 1-2-0) then took control of the game on the power play early in the third period. The Vikings were nearly at the end of being two players down when Hannah Cunha scored 1:31 into the period for a 3-1 lead. Still on the power play, Marian scored 61 seconds later for a 4-1 edge, and that goal completed a hat trick for Grosdidier. Marian added another goal at the 5:53 mark for a 5-1 advantage.
Marian went 2-for-3 on the power play, and Lawrence was 1-for-5.
Kingsland scored her first career power-play goal at the 12:11 mark to trim the margin to 5-2 as Askenazy and Moravchik both collected assists, but that's as close as the Vikings would get.
Sydney Seeley was spectacular in net for Lawrence in the opening period as she stopped all 22 shots she faced. Seeley finished with 47 saves. Lindsay Lewison made 27 saves for the Sabres.
