Vikings romp to doubleheader sweep of Ripon

APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University baseball team romped to a Midwest Conference doubleheader sweep of Ripon College on Saturday at Whiting Field.
Lawrence took the opener 13-3 in seven innings and won the nightcap 9-3.
In the opener, Michael Duttlinger went the distance for Lawrence as he allowed 10 hits, struck out 11 and walked just one.
Spenser Ross and Quinn Berglin both went 3-for-4 and both drove in a pair of runs for Lawrence, which wrapped up the season with 15 victories, tied for the third-most in school history. Lawrence's Jacob Charon was 2-for-4 with a homer and a triple, scored three runs and drove in a pair. Clayton Agler also was 2-for-4 with a double for the Vikings, who finished with 13 hits.
Lawrence (15-19, 8-16 MWC) got things started with three runs in the first when Berglin collected a run-scoring single, Charon smacked an RBI triple and Agler added a run-scoring single for a 3-0 lead. Lawrence tacked on a run in the second with the help of a Ripon error for a 4-0 advantage.
Ripon (8-29, 4-20) trimmed the lead to 4-3 by the top of the fifth, but the Vikings pulled away in the bottom half of the inning. The Vikings scored seven times in the fifth on seven hits as Charon led off the inning with a homer. Ross added a two-run single to push Lawrence's lead to 8-3, and Berglin followed with a single to score Ethan Plantz for a 9-3 edge. Zach Leslie picked up a run-scoring single, and Colin Wieksa was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Leslie for an 11-3 lead.
The Vikings ended the game on the 10-run rule with a pair of runs in the seventh. The Vikings had Charon at first with one out when Agler doubled, and a throwing error allowed both runners to score for the final margin.
Lawrence got another fine pitching performance from Jordan Schaefer in the second game. Schaefer went seven innings, allowed just four hits, struck out nine and walked six to get the victory. Senior Nick Guzzo pitched the final two innings to close out the Red Hawks.
Ross went 3-for-5, drove in a run and scored a run to pace the Vikings' 13-hit attack. Jake Land went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a pair of runs for Lawrence. Charon was 2-for-4, and Plantz went 2-for-5.
The Vikings trailed 1-0 before Land's two-run single in the second put the Vikings ahead. Lawrence added a run in the third when Leslie was hit by a pitch and scored on Agler's single for a 3-1 edge.
Ripon trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fifth, but the Vikings put together a five-run sixth inning. Land got things started with a one-out double and there were two outs when the Vikings strung together five consecutive hits. Plantz had a run-scoring single, Berglin added an RBI single, Leslie picked up a two-run double and Charon added a run-scoring single for an 8-2 lead.
Lawrence added a run in the seventh on Ross' run-scoring single to push the lead to 9-3. Ripon tacked on a run in the ninth for the final margin.
