APPLETON, Wis. -- On Senior Day for the Lawrence University softball team on Sunday, all four seniors were key performers for the Vikings as they split a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Lake Forest College at Whiting Field.Â
Lawrence won the opener 5-3, and Lake Forest captured the regular season finale 12-7 in eight innings.
  Senior pitcher
Emilia Jackson went the distance to win the opener, and senior center fielder
Amanda Karnatz had five hits in the doubleheader, including two doubles and two triples. Karnatz finished her career with 12 triples to tie the Lawrence career record. She already owns the career marks for hits, doubles and runs scored.
Jackson scattered 10 hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out two and walking one in the opener. Lawrence managed just five hits against Lake Forest starter Carlie Mertz, but the Vikings made them count.
Lawrence (7-17, 6-10 MWC) trailed 1-0 when the Vikings grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Senior catcher
Ceara Larson singled to start the inning and an error put runners at first and second. With two outs and runners at second and third,
Chapin Grumhaus' infield single scored both Larson and
Mikayla Jeneske to put the Vikings up 2-1.
The Vikings then stretched the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Senior
Kelli Quick started the rally with an infield single, and Karnatz then tripled to score Quick for a 3-1 advantage. Jackson followed with a groundout to score Karnatz, and the Vikings were up 4-1. After Larson was hit by a pitch, Jeneske followed with a single to left. The ball got past the outfielder, and Larson came around to score for a 5-1 lead.
Lake Forest got two runs in the top of the seventh and had the tying runs on base when Jackson struck out Hannah Kalnicky to end the game.
In the second game, Karnatz went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a triple. Jeneske went 3-for-4, homered and drove in three runs.Â
The Vikings jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third with Quick getting the rally started with a walk. After Karnatz doubled, a wild pitch scored Quick and Karnatz came home on Jackson's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Jeneske then hit a booming homer to center field and the Vikings were up 3-0.
Lake Forest then scored two runs in each of the next three innings to grab a 7-3 advantage. The Vikings picked up a run in the fifth with the help of a
Shelby Johnson single and an error to trim the lead to 7-4.
Lawrence rallied again in the sixth as Grumhaus led off with a double. After a pair of outs, Karnatz singled to score Grumhaus to trim the lead to 7-5. Jackson followed with a single and advanced to second on the throw to put two runners in scoring position. The Foresters intentionally walked Larson, and Jeneske made them pay. Jeneske singled up the middle to score Karnatz and Jackson to tie the game at 7-7.
The game went to extra innings, and Lake Forest scored five times on seven hits in the eighth to take control. Brie Gauther worked around a walk in the bottom of the eighth to get the win for Lake Forest.
