APPLETON, Wis. -- The Lawrence University volleyball team dropped the opening set Saturday against Mount Mary University, but the Vikings bounced back to knock off the Blue Angels 3-1 in a nonconference match at the Lawrence Invitational.
Lawrence topped Mount Mary 16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 at Alexander Gymnasium.
Elizabeth Liebau led Lawrence with 11 kills, and
Sophia Galassini added 10 kills, nine digs and an ace.
Liza Stalcup pitched in with nine kills, and
Aliana Butler-Gray and
Hilirie McLaughlin added seven kills apiece.
Dana Mestey paced the Vikings (5-6) with 32 assists, and she added 17 digs.
Kali Pfannerstill led the Vikings with 27 digs.
The Vikings turned things around late in the second set after Mount Mary scored three straight points to tie the set at 21-21. A service error and an attack error by the Blue Angels put the Vikings up 23-21 before a kill trimmed the lead to 23-22. Lawrence then got consecutive kills from Butler-Gray and Galassini closed out the set.
The third set was a back-and-fourth affair until the Vikings rattled off four consecutive points, two coming on kills by McLaughlin and Liebau, to grab a 22-20 lead. The teams then traded points until a kill by Galassini and a Mount Mary attack error gave the Vikings the set.
The Vikings got off to a good start in the fourth set and built a 19-12 lead. The Blue Angels clawed back and trimmed the lead to 21-20 before a setting error and an attack error pushed Lawrence's lead to 23-20. Mount Mary trimmed the lead back to 23-22, but Liebau hammered home a kill and Stalcup finished the set with an ace to deliver the match victory.
