RIPON, Wis. -- Lawrence University men's basketball star
Brad Sendell poured in 38 points Saturday, but it wasn't enough as Ripon College hung on for an 84-75 Midwest Conference win at Weiske Gymnasium.
Sendell went 13-for-25 from the floor, including 8-for-14 from 3-point range, on his way to the 11th-highest game total in Lawrence history. Sendell's previous career high came earlier this season when he scored 35 against UW-Eau Claire.
The eight 3-pointers is also a career high for Sendell and is the third-highest game total in school history. Sendell also added a team-best four assists to go with five rebounds. Sendell moved into fifth place on Lawrence's career scoring list and now has 1,370 points. He passed Lawrence Hall of Famer Doug Fyfe (1,342) and Chris Siebert (1,360).
 Â
Jake Fisher and
Elliot Jung added nine points apiece for the Vikings (6-9, 3-3 MWC), and
Kyle Lillwitz had eight points with
Brandon Danowski grabbing a team-best seven rebounds.
Ryan Steffes paced Ripon (9-5, 5-0) with 17 points.
Ripon led by 14 points in the second half at 63-49 when the Vikings rallied. Sendell started a 16-3 run with back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the lead to 63-55. After a Fisher layup and a Ripon basket, Sendell drained another 3-pointer to trim the margin to 66-60 with 10:08 left. After a jumper from
Adnan Sarancic, Sendell followed with a 3-pointer to cap the run and cut the lead to 66-65.
The teams traded baskets before Jung's three-point play tied the game at 71-71 with 3:52 remaining.
Ripon scored the game's next five points before Sendell's driving layup trimmed the lead to 76-73 with 1:51 left. Ripon then went 8-for-8 from the foul line over the final 1:33 to seal the victory. Lawrence missed its next three shots from the floor and committed a pair of turnovers during the decisive stretch.
The Red Hawks were red hot to start the game and jumped out to a 15-5 advantage less than five minutes into the contest. Lawrence then heated up as well, and the Vikings outscored Ripon 28-17 over a stretch of eight minutes. That run was capped by a Sendell 3-pointer with 7:17 left in the opening half to give the Vikings a 33-32 lead.
Ripon countered by scoring the final nine points of the first half to take a 49-37 lead at the break.
Lawrence returns to action on Jan. 22 when the Vikings travel to Monmouth College.
